The Nigerian Army has dismissed allegations that its personnel are compelled to purchase uniforms and protective gear with personal funds, describing the claims as “inaccurate and misleading.”
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, said the military provides all necessary kits and ensures that soldiers are adequately equipped for their duties.
The Army’s response follows a viral interview by former soldier, Rotimi Olamilekan, who alleged that troops often buy uniforms, boots and bulletproof vests despite receiving low pay.
Refuting the claims, the Army maintained that it operates a structured welfare and remuneration system. It noted that personnel receive consolidated monthly salaries, uniform allowances and other entitlements.
According to the statement, soldiers deployed to operational theatres also benefit from additional operational allowances tied to the nature of their assignments.
The military further explained that uniforms, protective gear, arms and ammunition are supplied through established logistics and procurement channels.
While acknowledging that some personnel may choose to acquire additional or customised items for personal convenience, it stressed that such purchases are voluntary and do not reflect any systemic shortfall.
Reaffirming its commitment to troop welfare, the Army insisted that no soldier is deployed for operations without the requisite protective equipment.
It warned that the spread of unverified allegations could negatively impact morale and undermine ongoing security efforts across the country.
Addressing the circumstances surrounding Olamilekan’s dismissal, the Army clarified that his discharge was due to disciplinary infractions, including violations of military social media regulations, and not for expressing personal opinions.
The clarification comes amid heightened public scrutiny of the welfare of military personnel engaged in counter-insurgency and internal security operations across Nigeria.
Defence analysts have consistently emphasised the importance of adequate funding, logistics support and welfare packages to sustain morale and operational effectiveness, particularly in frontline deployments.
The Nigerian Army urged the public to rely on verified information and support the armed forces in their efforts to safeguard national security.
